Thanks for this Catherine, I saw this last night & wanted to post on it, but we had no open thread! In any case it’s fascinating stuff. Beyond the inevitable lag in the data & the errors, the general trends are quite telling. The difference between ‘inside the perimeter’ & Metro regions vs. ‘the rest of Ga.’ especially so. For counties ‘outside’? Not only are they poorer overall, but people just don’t travel much to or from them, and when they do? They’re not going far. As Chris notes, on the ground this has real political-economic implications. All over. And yes, ‘chain migration’ for whatever reasons (the usual, jobs & family) can be seen in many places. Sometimes this is fairly traditional too and may have been going on for generations. But politically? More Diversity=More Democrats (Generally). This unfortunately may not apply to retirees however. I worked on a similar project with someone using Google Maps. We got the data from the mid-decade “half” census or whatever. My guess is that since the data is modelled based on a sample there will be some errors, especially for small county moves like that. Back in 2006 when we did this we were comparing 2000 to 2005 moves and it was fascinating to see who comes to DeKalb and Fulton and then where the people already in those counties went. Quite the migration patterns, explains a lot about the changing political and voting trends here.
